The 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012
The patron of the Olympiad is the Rector of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Prof Peep Lassmann
The composer of the Olympiad is Arvo Pärt
The 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012 for students of general comprehensive secondary schools will be organised by the Estonian Society for Music Education (ESME) and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) in cooperation with the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS) and with the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research.
Guidelines for the 1st International Music Olympiad (IMuO)
In recognition of the growing significance of music in the field of culture and in the general education of young people, and with the aim of enhancing the development of international contacts in the field of school education in music, an international music Olympiad will be organised for lower and upper secondary school students. The Olympiad will be called The 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012 and is a competition between individuals.
The aims of the Olympiad:
- To strengthen the position of music education as a creative subject in national curricula;
- To create motivation and offer musically talented young people opportunities for artistic self-expression at international level;
- To widen opportunities for composing music (participants can use vocal and acoustic musical instruments as well as various electro-acoustical instruments and audio-visual multimedia.
- To develop musical literacy as a prerequisite for creative activities;
The 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012 will take place from 25-29 April 2012 for participants of two age groups: Group I - aged 12-14, and Group II - aged 15-18. The contestants shall be students of general lower and upper secondary schools or music schools, which cannot be considered music colleges.
From each country 2 competitors can take part in both age groups (3 in the case of Estonia). The total number of contestants is limited to 33 participants in each age groups.
The deadline for registration of participants in the 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012 is 2 April 2012.
Participation fee: 50 EUR.

All participants will be provided with free accommodation (4 nights) and meals. The participants must cover the travelling costs.
When a participant’s composition requires additional performers, the sending country must cover all the additional costs. Performers do not have to pay the participation fee.
Each country can send up to 2 accompanying persons. One accompanying person will be provided with free accommodation (4 nights) and meals. The accompanying person must cover the travelling costs.
The sending country covers all costs of the second accompanying person.
Accompanying persons do not have to pay the participation fee.
The 1st International Music Olympiad Tallinn 2012 will take place in Tallinn, at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (16 Rävala Str.; Tallinn, Estonia).
The tasks for the Olympiad shall be compiled by the international committee established by the Estonian Society for Music Education (ESME), the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) and the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS).
The language used at the Olympiad will be English. Written tasks (assignments) for both groups will be provided in the native language of the contestant.
The results of the Olympiad will be assessed by an international jury of 5 members. The results will be presented in the form of protocols.
Content of the Olympiad
Group I (aged 12-14)
The Olympiad will consist of three parts.
Part I
- Music listening and theoretical questions related to the piece.
- Singing/playing (on their own instrument) a simple melody; clapping a rhythm exercise
Part II – Performing a song.
The participant will perform one song (by individual choice) at a public concert. The song must be performed from memory, either unaccompanied or with accompaniment by acoustic instruments in suitable key for him/her.
We recommend performing a song written by a composer of the participant’s country and in the participant’s native language.
A song composed by the competitor is not allowed to perform here (in case it will be performed also in the part III).
Part III – Original composition.
The participant will perform an original piece of 3 minutes, prepared beforehand.
The original composition can be composed for the voice, or for acoustic or electro-acoustic instruments, or for audiovisual and multimedia performance.
The original composition can be a song for solo voice or vocal ensemble, (unaccompanied or with accompaniment), a piece for an instrument or instruments, or a composition using electro-acoustic, audiovisual or multimedia performance.
Other singers and instrumentalists can be used for the performance.
The composed music must be the original production of the participant (pre-existing lyrics may be used).
The original piece of music will be performed live at a public concert or, in case of compositions for multimedia, from a pre-recorded source.
Parts II and III for the 1st group of contestants (performing a song and original piece) are public presentations (concerts). The performances will be recorded for study purposes and photographs will be taken.
At registration (on 25 April in Tallinn) each participant must add:
- A short description of the song in written form
- A score and a short description of the original composition in written form.
Group II (aged 15-18)
The Olympiad consists of three parts.

Awards
All participants will be awarded with diplomas in gold, silver or bronze according to the number of points scored. Special prizes will be awarded to the best performers of a song (of both age groups), to the best composers of original compositions and to the best contestant with the highest score in the listening tasks.
The jury is entitled to award additional prizes in the case of extraordinary achievement in some field of the Olympiad.
